Exterior and lining fabric:
Use this pattern to cut one left piece and one right piece for both exterior fabric and lining fabric.
Elastic or ties:
Elastic: 6” or desired length
Ties: 2 pieces cut at 18” for the top ties and 2 pieces cut at 16” for the bottom ties.
Nose piece
4” piece of bendable metal. Ideally plastic coated. Twist ties, pipe cleaners, etc.

Let’s get started…

1. To cut exterior and lining fabrics from pattern pieces: You will need to cut one of each face up and one of each face down so that you have two pieces off exterior fabric that are mirror images, and two pieces of lining fabric that are mirror images.

2. Place the two pieces of exterior fabric face to face. Sew the middle seam (curved part) at a 1/4” seam allowance. Do the same with the lining fabric.

3. Iron open the seams on the exterior fabric and sew a top stitch 1/8” from center seam on both sides. Do the same with the lining fabric.

4. Mark the edges of both the exterior and lining at 1” from the edge. We use an erasable pen that irons away for this. Tailors chalk will work, too.

 

5. Fold the exterior fabric at the 1” line, and fold the edge into the seam so there is a 1/2” seam. Iron flat and sew. Do this for both sides on both the exterior fabric and the lining fabric.

6. Line up the exterior and lining face to face. Pin the pieces together, and sew the top and bottom edges with a 3/8” seam allowance.

7. If you have a serger, finish off the top and bottom seams. You can also use a tight zig zag seam on a home sewing machine, or leave the edges unfinished. Finishing the edges will protect the fabric from unraveling in when you wash and dry your mask between washes.

8. Turn the mask inside out, and iron the seams flat.

9. Now it is time to place the nose piece in the top seam. Center it, and tack down the fabric to the right and left of the nose piece so that it stays in place.

10. Tuck in serged end and topstitch top and bottom edges. Start the topstitch 1/2” from the beginning and stop 1/2” from the opposite edge.

11. And last, but not least! Insert elastic or ties into edges and top stitch.
