Monstera Shadow. All Jana Lam prints are accompanied by their shadow print; the layer that goes underneath the graphic lines of the top print.  All of the designs have them, but most of them can’t stand alone as a graphic in and of itself. Monstera is a print that can stand alone. It has such an ideal quintessential shape that it’s the perfect classic, elegant choice for a lot of people, and oh so lovely.

Orchid.  Jana is actually not a huge fan of Orchids. Though she thinks they are beautiful, she also feels like they are too elegant, too elusive maybe, and too cold. But for some reason, at the time this print was created she was slightly obsessed with drawing them.  Maybe the inner challenge was for her to take a flower she didn’t particularly care for and turn it into something she really loved.  Whatever the case, she had a really fun time creating these unique blooms; mixing up different graphic elements inside each one to give them all unique and playful looks.

Banana Leaf. The Banana Leaf print is one of the most time honored prints in the Jana Lam Catalog . It is a symbol of love and aloha in her life. A proposal with a ring on a baby banana plant in San Francisco is what  brought her back to Hawai'i, her home, and its endless summers. She drew the leaf, not only because she loves them, but because it represents a wonderful time in her life and the plant that brought so much joy to her and so many others.  The babies of the original banana plant and it’s babies have spawned so many more banana plants that have been passed along amongst Jana’s circle of friends .  The banana leaf print is a beautiful reminder of all the good things, and it brings people together.

Seaflower.  Seaflower is THE ORIGINAL Jana Lam print. Seaflower was the first print Jana made when she moved home to Hawaii from San Francisco in 2010, which was the same year she started her company.  It is the print from which everything began. In essence Seaflower was her guinea pig while she figured out how to set up her own studio and screen print on her own. To make this design she used large opaque pens (opaque pens are notoriously leaky and hard to deal with and once you make a mistake there is no going back) and drew directly on a huge piece of tracing paper.  Her aim was just to create a simple design that she could use to test out on her screens because she didn’t want to have to deal with getting film made at that point.  So she had to draw very large to cover the big piece of trace. The rather giant flowers of the current print have been reworked a bit but they were actually drawn at almost same size that they are now.  So in essence, the print remains pretty similar to the original and is unlike almost all of the other prints in the catalog, which were drawn at a smaller scale and done in pencil and then traced over in Micron pen. Funny enough, even though she did a lot of research, drawing, and test-printing, it was never with the idea to make her own products out of the fabric.  She didn’t go into screen-printing with the intention to start a business.  But she did, and Seaflower, which in the beginning was one of only a few prints (and the standout) that she used for her products, came to encapsulate and define the entire brand.  Jana immediately realized that it was the strongest and most singular design of her small collection of prints, and so she used one of the flowers as her trademark and put it in her logo.  And that in short, is why Seaflower is the classic, quintessential print of the brand, and still among the most popular designs, (if not the most popular design) in the entire catalog.

Fabric:
All Jana Lam Handmade in Hawaii textiles are silk-screened by hand on cotton fabrics with water-based inks. Coaster sets are made from a 100% cotton in a variety of different fabric styles, and reinforced with fleece interfacing to give the fabric some shape with a soft feel.

Care:
The #janalamfam recommends spot cleaning when smaller spots show up. We usually use Shout Wipes for that, but Jana has used tide pens in the past. Make sure if there is a white top print to be a little more gentle on rubbing spots out. Since the ink sits on top of the fabric a bit more than other colors, there is a chance of the ink rubbing off and getting on other parts of the fabric.

But, you can put your Jana Lam's in the wash. We usually use a hand wash cycle and lay flat to dry. After it's dried, it is always good to give it a little bit of an iron. We use 100% cotton fabric, so it may shrink in the dryer, but will definitely stand up to ironing.
