Local Motion and I have come full circle. The brand is only a mere 3 years my senior, so in essence we’ve grown up together. Local Motion was part of the backdrop of my life, infusing it with surfer girl style (though tbh I was more at home on the sand than sea through my teenage years). I never would have dreamed that as an adult I would get a chance to collaborate and create something with them. I was so excited by the prospect of merging our two distinct but kindred aesthetics. And for inspiration, I was not in short supply. This year has been a little bit of a nostalgic one in general for some reason, and at Jana Lam we’ve been throwing it back with backpacks and scrunchies; two staples of my 90’s world, alongside The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Greenday, Britney Spears and *NSYNC. So it was only natural to keep the vibe right and bright with loud prints and colors for the designs and colors of our collaboration. We merged Local Motion surf and sunshine with our Jana Lam rainbow style; the blended ombre of our hand printed fabric. It all seems so serendipitous, as nowadays I’m more keen to catch waves than catch rays, so I’m living for this partnership and loving how my kids’ eyes went super wide and they giggled with glee when I showed them the pieces we created. My son actually said he thinks they are his favorite things that I have ever done. There’s something so wonderful in being able to pass that same sunshine and love I grew up with to my little loves. So here’s to hanging ten, hanging loose and having so much fun, rain or shine.
Jana Lam is a Honolulu, Hawaii based design company that focuses on products and accessories for an endless summer. Lam's beach front home once served as the production house of her handmade in Hawaii line of one-of-a-kind, hand-printed and sewn apparel and home accessories. In Fall 2017, printing and production move out of the home studio, and the Jana Lam Studio + Shop was opened in Kaka'ako.
